You don't say what oil pump you are using but there are a couple different pump drive rods. Standard SBC, 400sb, and another for running a BB oil pump. All are different lengths.

Two other problems that I have run into are the coupler size being a little tight and a miss machined drive gear. The gear was crooked and would have been fine on a worn stock pump but wouldn't engage a tighter tolerance drive shaft. Funny thing was that was on a MSD drop in HEI.
