C10 , I dont know if you have it off yet , but if it were me I would get a hole saw just large enough to fit over the threaded area and cut the outer off . At this point you can reach the 2 bolts holding the filter adapter on and remove it all together . This will keep you clear of the sealing area . I would not worry about damaging the adapter . I would want to replace it anyway . I think there is something going on with the threads between the two anyway .
