My wife and I LOVE going out there to visit. My favorite 4th of july ever was spending the week in Huntington Beach in 2019, we did the parade, fireworks, whole day, it was a dream. My wife was born in LA and grew up in Whittier, CA. We found her childhood home. The same people that bought it from her parents in 1989 still own it. We love to visit, the weather is fantastic, the car scene is amazing, but I couldn't do it... We're upper middle class in SC and we're only 4 years away from owning our house. We'd be poor as hell in CA. My house and lot in some areas of CA would be worth over a million. It's "only" worth about 300K here
