I use 80 grit on my National Detroit DA, It sounds like coarse grit but it really is not, it works great 1 hr to strip the hood and 2 hrs for the doors inside and out, makes lots of noise and dust but works great and will not damage metal and a whole roll of disks is 40$ for the good 3m ones and that will do an entire truck

the next step in prep is to wipe it down with wax and grease remover and lay some high build epoxy down, I over reduce the first coat to get in all the surface imperfections and then spray it as directed and then do 2-3coats , then guide coat and block then if I sand through I re prime and block again.....then primer sealer wet sand with 400-600 depending on paint specs and ready to go
