looked this up when I got home and it sounds reasonable to me but I'm no chemist/scientist by a long shot..

Does an Apple Absorb Smoke Smell?

heard about this years before this article but don't see a lot on the subject so maybe, maybe not..

thanks to Mrs. Bee, apples are stock item in our fridge so I figured it's an inexpensive chance to take..
