I haven't read through all of the replys, but a few things......how old is the gas? You mentioned it sat for a little while. If if has an EGR sensor that would be suspect. Also, check the ball in the PCV valve and make sure it moves. If it's carbureted and the engine has backfired even one time, change the power valve in the carb. Probably also changed the fuel filter but if not do that too.
