I think GM has the concept of "if it ain't broke, we don't need to fix it". Simply meaning that the design worked well and didn't need a lot of changing.
Is this one of those calipers that works with the bare bones disc conversion kits? The ones that only supply brackets and bolts and you need to find your own calipers and rotors?

I'd believe he got it with a CPP kit. I asked because they had a nice smooth look to them rather than the rough cast look of the stock units.
