Many of those switches are adjustable. The inner "tube" section of the switch is a snug press fit into the outer "nut" portion and can be slid back to match the length of the old switch.

In theory, you could install the new switch and it would get pushed in to the correct distance the first time you close the door. But in practice, that can often result in denting the door or other damage. A better method would be to pre-adjust the length of the new switch by carefully squeezing it in a vice. For that you will need to find a piece of tubing/pipe, deep well socket, or other suitable spacer that can be placed over the base/terminal end of the switch, leaving room for it to slide in a bit.
