I hear ya on that. I'm actually about to swap out the TPI converted 305 in my C10 for something late model because I tried tuning myself and it didn't work out well. Actually bought a 2003 Dually with an 8.1L to put in but the truck has 60k miles and is worth more together so I'm fixing the dually and selling it.
There is a tuning shop about 80 miles from me that specializes in only LS tuning and has a good reputation, going to bring my gf's 6.0L Z28 there to get tuned. Obviously that doesn't help you but just read the reviews for shops on LS1tech, there's gotta be a decent one around there.
