TH350 input shaft tabs

Hi:
The tabs on my TH350 input shaft which the torque converter suppose to slide over them ( I am sorry I don't know if these parts have specific names) have broken. I was trying to connect the transmission to the engine but the bell housing wouldn't seat right next to the block. When I looked inside I noticed the converter is not sliding all the way back and that was when I noticed these two small pieces are broken in front of the input shaft seal and they don't let the converter slide all the way in.The transmission is fairly recent rebuilt. Are these tabs critical for the function of the transmission or they are just guides? Do I have to replace the input shaft? Are they even on the input shaft? I don't know much about the structure of the transmission.
Thanks
