Since he mentioned the gears for gas mileage, I'd assume he swapped them in there.
3.42's are now made and sold for the 14 bolt floater rearends, but I don't believe they would have been offered from the factory in a vehicle like this that is meant for towing. Would have had 3.73's minimum (mine does).

Doesn't sound like much change but if it indeed has 3.42's or even 3.55's as the owner claims (he may have his numbers crossed), it will kill the towing power around town (2.48 first gear in the 400) and those tall tires aren't helping either. Might be okay on the highway towing once you get up to speed. Personally the 3.73's I run I find are a perfect compromise, good acceleration for towing and still goes down the highway at 70 just fine.

Just my observation if your goal is to have a nice tow vehicle.
