My 66 panel tank had a small quantity of pinholes from rust (truck sat for 40 years). After tanking, the radiator shop guy was able to solder the bad spots, then coated both the inside AND outside of the tank. I'm pretty sure that he used different products (inside vs. outside) during the process. That was 2 years ago and the tank continues on down the road.
I did install an inline fuel filter which I ran for first 100 miles after the restoration then changed out.
I would recommend coating the inside with the appropriate product applied by an experienced pro.
