The biggest difference is the LH drop drive shaft. The reverse rotation of the ford D44 ring and pinion is a stronger design as well. The D44 is easier to locate and this makes for a cheaper axle. As far as steering goes you can moce up to a cross over steering system and you can find kits out there to do it very reasonable.
