Re: a REAL 1966 C10 Barn Find

Just got back from my trip so before I left I removed the spark plugs and shot two different types of penetrating oil in the cylinders - we do not actually know for sure its even locked up, just assuming the worst and didn't have time before the trip out of state to try and see if it would turn over. I removed the valve covers and was pleasantly surprised to find it so clean looking under there. Super clean original looking GM AC Delco 45S spark plugs in it too - all were beautiful like they were new when it was parked. soaked the push rods and valves with Marvel Mystery Oil and let it sit all week so we will be trying to turn her over this weekend. Cross your fingers! Removed the carb and despite its incredibly dirty topside, it was clean as a whistle inside. Decided to take it to the shop and rebuild it anyway - simply been sitting for too long to trust it no matter how nice it looked.
A 1958-1966 283 V8 in a 1/2 ton pickup was always painted at the factory Gray - not orange - it was so nice to see so much surviving factory Gray paint on the valve covers. The water pump was changed at some point in the early 80's at the dealership, and the dealer sprayed a close match to the correct Gray on the pump, and around the front of the motor and some on the rocker covers, so thats why you see two shades of the Gray color. Very rare to see anyone try to match the Gray which was never really available. You have to custom match the Gray. I have a code if anyone needs it for your own correct 283 restoration. The carb return spring was painted at the factory a pale, mint green color on 283's - a seldom known fact and seldom repainted correctly in restorations. My carb return spring still shows a good bit of this green paint as you see here. Can't wait to see if we can bring this sleeping 283 back to life - more updates soon
