Totally agree. If you want it to stay looking as good as possible while still using it consider buying the two part epoxy you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's and coat it after a light sanding. It'll make the softer pine more resistant to incidental dents.
If you're still gonna beat the crap out of it then pine was the best choice anyway. When/if it looks awful throw a coat of semi gloss black Rustoleum on it.
