Thanks for your help, guys!

I ran the 3/8-24 die down the shifter threads this weekend. I was careful to keep it perpendicular, which was kind of hard. It felt a little tight at first and then got easy the rest of the way down. Then I was able to spin a 3/8-24 nut up and down the threads with ease.

Then I ordered a proper round shifter ball. eBay even had one with the correct SM465 shift pattern. I hope the quality is ok, because sometimes eBay is sketchy.
