Yeah... that's about where I'm at with mine. Hence I have searched for a solution. I removed the sending unit to check the float, etc as my gauge won't go past half full. No change. Then came the smell. So I believe I'll replace unit and gasket.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to this. It was really a lot of help!
