From what I've seen on the two K trucks I've had, there may not have ever been a retaining ring, as no holes around either boot. What I did on my X-fer shiftier was install a round boot and put it down the hole far enough that the pleats of the boot hold it in. No ring is needed and it puts the Boot low enough that it will lay against the floor correctly when in 2 Hi. Not sure if the boots I used were correct, as had a couple different ones to choose from, but looks like you could cut down the tranny shifter from a later truck and make that work. Sorry no pictures, but not very good at posting them (have to get my wife to do it) but hope you get the idea, as it has worked good for me.
