Wire on trans

Maybe someone can help me. I have a 1979 chevy blazer. On the trans/ transfer case is a wire that is plugged into the trans shifter linkage. I believe it is to let you know when the 4 wheel drive is engaged. I have the wire that is attached to the trans an I think it goes up through the shifter cover and goes somewhere. That is what I want to know, where does the other end go and what does it connect to? I will get pictures later. Thanks, John
