think of it as a 1" shaft diameter with two "D"'s carved in it. so even though the hollow shaft at the bottom of your (presumably) GM column didnt start out as a solid shaft, the principle is the same, so by your measurement it is a 1"DD.

HOWEVER

you will need a coupler at the column, and most guys put a u joint there because the likelihood that your steering column points directly at your steering box is very rare. so rather than ordering a 1" DD shaft and a 1"DD to 1"DD coupler/u joint at the column, save yourself a 1/4" in space to the drivers side exhaust manifold and buy a 1"DD to 3/4"DD coupler/u joint and use a 3/4 DD shaft. if you have a GM steering box you will need a 30 spline to 3/4" DD u joint

and just a word of advice, dont put the 3/4" DD shaft inside your 1"DD steering column hollow shaft and bolt it down, use a coupler or u joint!
