I put a VA system in my Corvette and I don't remember having to use a relay. VA didn't have a system made for the 1977 Corvette, so there were a few "other" problems with the installation. They had to send me another circuit board to get the controls to work, which was a study in frustration, and I also ended up hard wiring the lights because they never did work proper wired into the VA system.
I actually debated back and forth on buying the heater from VA because of all the problems I had, and I also didn't install an air conditioning unit in the truck because of all the problems I had with the Corvette install.
