The need for notching the bed support will depend on the spring length. The longer 56" HD springs don't require notching to clear a drop shackle. The shorter 52" lighter duty springs will require clearance.

As for which is better.... That's prob subjective. Personally, the rear shackle is less work.

Although you didn't ask, as Mongocanfly stated c-notching will be required. That being said, you'll still likely bottom out occasionally as the rear differential will hit the bed floor. This is a pic of my old 74 that was dropped w/a flip + Belltech shackles:
