I worked for Caterpillar for 30 years and Cat uses Grade 8 on everything. Use a grade 8 nut with your grade 8 bolt and your joint should be stronger than a rivet which is made from softer material in order to be peened. Stop by your Cat dealer and pick up a copy of "One Safe Source". This has a fastener catelog for Grade 8 nuts and bolts and much more. A good reference book and free.
