40 year old rigs can have all kinds of things happen. The end caps on the shafts can waller out the hole in the control arm and cause a lot of slop. My LCA on my 1972 had been hit by who knows what (probably a curb) and the area the cap goes through was bent pretty bad. I was able to bend it back into shape and make it work.
