DO NOT drive long distances in 4th gear without the Converter Locked!! The Carriers/"Planetaries" DO NOT lube correctly in 4th without the TCC Apply Valve stroked, This is caused by restricted cooler flow which isn't a big deal in 1st & 2nd gear because your not it those gears very long, In 3rd (Direct), Everything is locked together & spinning as one.....VERY little lube oil is needed because neither Carrier are overrunning.
In 4th......BOTH Carriers Overrun & they need ALL the lube oil they can get!

I'm trying to wrap my head around this. I've heard it before.
But looking at the hydraulic diagram it would appear that when the converter is locked, fluid (Conv Feed) from the pressure regulator is forced through an orifice before going to the cooler.
When unlocked, oil returned from the converter has two paths before around the TCC valve before going to the cooler. I know the diagram is for third gear but I don't see the cooler path changing because of shift valve position.
Thanks
