Maybe I can help. I just reinstalled my '64 GMC Deluxe heater and there are two studs that protrude into the cab from under the hood. These studs use a 7/16" nut on the inside of the firewall. There are also six coarse thread bolts that attach the top portion of the heater box to the cowl. These bolts are bolted right into the cowl and use no attaching nuts. However, a couple of the holes in my cowl had been stripped so I used 1/2" speed nuts (available from Home Depot, Lowe's, etc) see image to allow the attaching bolts to be tightened properly.
