Mice will sometimes nibble on the suction hoses on the tank tops. Guessing old hoses + ethanol was enough of an attraction. Got both of mine within days of each other. Have seen forum pics of rusted out sending unit tops that let air it.
Old hoses can crumble and let air in.
As a test, pull the hose(s) from the input side of the switch valve and connect direct to the frame pipes.
Don't forget the suction line from the frame to the fuel pump.
On my 75, in on the switch top is right tank.
