A poly tank would be fine...but you will have to use a fill hose method like I described....one thing you wouldn't have to worry about...rust...
If you go with metal....any competent radiator shop can melt the old neck off and back on with no problem...I would think that most people would have enough sense not
to apply flame near a tank that had gas or residual gas fumes still in it....but....you never know...
