dwcsr is right, the first three numbers tell you the engine displacement of a GMC motor, the leading letter is the main bearing clearance corresponding to a list.
your engine number to me indicates its the original engine, replacement GMC 228 are usually zero'd or X'd out or just plain blank past the displacement.

From what I could find 52 was the last 228, 248 was 53 up and 270 larger trucks
