Re: Help -- Old Fashioned engine tuning with vacuum gauge

Yours should be seen straight down behind the water pump.
There’s also no reason you can’t move your tab/balancer marks to a better location you can see. Just confirm tdc #1 with a piston stop, remark yourbalancer and set up a new timing tab.
The timing cover for the 96-02 L31 engine that he's using is a little different than a traditional SBC cover.

you may also want to check the advance characteristics of the distributor. here is a quick read for you that may help.
Agreed! The timing tables for a stock engine are readily available if you decide to adjust the mechanical and vacuum advance curves of the distributor. L31 heads are more efficient than older stock heads and the engines actually like to run around 36 deg max advance. The racers often set timing in reverse of most street guys, putting the spark at max advance at 2500-3000 rpm then figuring out how to get the idle they want with carb alone.

I believe you will have better results if you work out a way to set and check timing using a light. I've found that painting the tab on the L31 timing cover with white or silver paint can help.
