The "fat tires" on pickups back in the 1970s were about the same width as the more or less standard 265/70r17 of today

I had 7.50-16 on my K/20 and they did fine except for getting stuck in mud a lot. The tall narrow tires sure helped with clearance and approach/breakover/departure angles just with a stock suspension. I went up on roads where my inside tire was rubbing the sidewall and the outside tire was hanging partway over the edge. It was about 1500' straight down on the outside!
