A nut or other small part falling through the carburetor and making its way into a cylinder isn't going to make the engine starve for fuel. Have you looked down the carburetor with a flashlight to see if your missing part is perhaps caught in a throttle plate?
It sounds like you're going to need to do some work on your carburetor. If you're pretty sure the bolt or nut or whatever it was made its way through the carburetor, you might pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand. See if it wants to stop somewhere - that will give you a pretty good idea that there is something in there. But to be honest with you, I would be surprised if that's the case.
