My parents were very hippie like, independent living when I was younger. They attended alot of in the wild survival type classes as well as mushroom and plant gathering. They didn't dedicate enough time to mushrooms, there are so many that look alike, so the only ones we picked were morels. Like Tim pointed out his parents friend was an expert and still almost died.
The one cool thing my folks showed us was about licorice fern, and it taste like licorice.
