Tried and true process for me now is if a bike is on top, the garage door opener is out of the car and left in the garage. I also often hang a red flag on a string or chain and clip it to the door so it hangs in my view when the door opens.

Both ideas are good. I had already decided to hide my opener in my console when a bike is hooked up.
