1989 C30 front caliber question

My daily work truck is a 1970 GMC C30, but I custom built it with 1989 Front K frame in order to get heavier suspension and disk brakes. It has an International 7.3 IDI diesel bolted up to a ZF S6 and needs the extra heavy front end to carry the weight. I am having problems with the right front brake caliber rattling. There seems to be too much clearance between the anti rattle spring and the retaining clip. I tried a new caliper and the clearance is the same. Does anyone know how much space is supposed to be between the retainer and the rear edge of the caliper? I'm wondering if the spindle slides are worn out or am I getting remanufactured callipers with too much metal removed.
I have even had the spring and retainer work loose and rub the inside of the wheel rim. Thats too close to having the caliber come out and a failure for me so Im looking for answers.
I know where I can get a used spindle but wonder if there is a way to check it before going to the trouble of getting it off the wreck.
