You can take the control arm loose at the inboard side, where the cross shaft u bolts mount through the suspension crossmember. That way you don't have to mess with the ball joints and the spring will just about fall out.

thought i saw something like that on you tube, but wasn't sure if there was a chance of messing something up on the front end.
I've seen it done where people take all types of things apart to get to the spring.
then again, i saw one where the guy didn't take brakes off or anything and was able to get springs out.
