If you want to soften the ride in the rear, I doubt going to half ton springs will make an enormous difference. All the original trucks I've ridden in were sprung very stiff, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton. I don't have much experience in the coil sprung models, mostly a 4x4 guy myself. I would look into a shackle flip for the rear springs, with a set of longer 64" springs off a newer 3/4 ton truck. You'd get a softer ride with more suspension travel, and maintain the hauling capacity of your suspension.

DIY4X has some nice gear, and they are who I'll use when I get to my shackle flip. OffRoadDesign is another good place that makes custom suspension stuff for our year trucks.
