Some trucks are OK with 3" springs, but some can't be aligned. If you really want to lower your truck, I would get a complete kit rather than trying to figure out what a PO cooked up. (F'd up?).
On mine I went with ECE disc conversion and 5 lug axles so that I could actually have some wheels to choose from. The drop disc spindles are the best way to get the truck down IMO. 2 1/2" then you can play with springs to get what you want. 4 1/2" on my truck.

My tires in the back are 31/10.5 r15. Front tires are 235/70r15. It's stock height, just wanted the top of tire to wheel well the same on front and back.
