There are a number of lug bolt pattern gauges available that are pretty handy from one printed out on a business card to fancy ones like the ones in the following Ebay adds.

I picked this one up a couple of years ago and it is about 3/16 aluminum and slides in my hip pocket real easy to go wheel or axle hunting.

My wheels for my 48 off a 1976 Cadillac Seville that we used to have and my wife drove for several years.
Later Rear wheel drive Sevilles had 5 on 5 rims though.
