I am thinking of using the 3M self healing clear film, though I suspect it would show a haze of small scratches after not too long.

My taste is a little over the top for bling so I've also considered installing low profile polished stainless strips though they would REALLY show scratches if there are tiny bits of grit adhering to your shoe when you step on them.
