One word of caustion. I have one of the code reading, code clearing scanners that I paid about $50 for. As mentioned above it will help you get the code so you can search online for fixes but the problem is that the codes don't always tell you which part "caused" the failure.

I don't like to take my vehicles in for repair if I can fix them but I spent over $100 a few years ago chasing an emissions code. Three freaking sensor/solenoids and one fuel cap later I got it fixed -the last sensor/solenoid is the one that fixed it.

Would have been cheaper to have the dealer tell me which one was failing.
