I have one and have used both sand and coal slag with it. Coal slag worked best but I had significant issues with water getting back into the suction tube and when that happens all bets are off.

I've been wanting to monkey with putting some sort of check valve in the sand suction line but have not gotten back to it. Perhaps I bought too cheap a unit but it was around $40.
