It does make much difference which side you start with as long as you dont let run dry

Haven't seen one hooked to the steering pump but haven't everything

That is normal . If you have access to a power bleeder it will make the job a whole lot easier .Shoe adjustment is the key to keeping good pedal height . The hydro vac has a limited stroke .
