That axle is a semi float axle. The bearing surface is not the axleshaft, but the axle shaft still bears weight of the vehicle. For non HD purposes however, the 9" is a great axle. There are aslo C clip eliminator kits available for the 10 and 12B axles, that might be a cheaper solution rather than swap out stuff.
