When you start drag racing it doesn't matter what engine ,Trans or rear you are running you will more than likely break things. Even if you are running a 4x4 in 2wd it is putting power thru the transfer case so you are adding something to break. As far as engine swaps I did my first one when I was a senior in high school with a tripod made from trees we cut down and a borrowed chain fall outside in January. As far as having 4x4 for winter driving it is nice but unless you live on a long driveway it really isn't needed. My uses her 4x4 about three times a year and I just use a tote of sand for traction in my 2wd truck. I did have to shovel out of a snow bank a couple years ago it took 10 minutes.
