Yes. Stock pumps like mentioned can push alot of pressure especially the 2 port pumps with no return line. Using a FPR is nessasary once in a while to help with this especially with edelbrock carbs. Going leaner one step should not have caused driveability issues.
What symptoms besides the plugs are you dealing with? Usually a FP problem with an edelcrap will cause a stalling problem.
