Transmission cover question

Okay I got a Transmission cover from a fellow members '58 Gmc V8 and when I put it on my truck, on one side it doesn't fit too well. I'm guessing you have to bolt it down? But how does the Accelerator pedal go on, it doesn't fit over the holes(Does it need the rubber cover to fit?)

Re: Transmission cover question

OrrieG or Ogre are the go to guys on that one.

It's been 40 years since I had my 57 Panel and I had the cover off it when I blew the clutch and tore up the bellhousing and trans but I don't remember anything about the cover except it took a number of bolts (lag bolts) to hold it down.

Re: Transmission cover question

Cover plate comes in two configurations, flat for 3 speed column shift and humped for floor 4 speed. Both are usually warped and need to be screwed and sealed to the floor. The throttle mount to the firewall and cab floor. The tranny cover can be R&R without messing with the throttle. Here are diagrams from the FAM, good book to have.

Re: Transmission cover question

I seem to remember 58-59 acc pedal is different than 55-57. In images above there's a bracket welded to the floor and pedal is attached at lower end with pivot pin. None of this depends on the floor cover.

Do you have any pictures?

Re: Transmission cover question

1project2many is correct. 58-59 accelerator pedal mounts to the floor partly on the trans cover. The 55-57 accelerator pedal is a different design, as shown in the assembly manual pictures. Which one do you have?

I'd take a pic, but my truck is about 500 miles away.

Re: Transmission cover question

My pedal is currently bolted to the floor, does the rubber cover make it big enough to go on the transmission cover?

I'll post a photo when I can

Re: Transmission cover question

Mine are long gone but I think they were recessed clutch head sheet metal screws, maybe #8 or so. If you want original someone like Jim Carter will have them, if you want something that works see what fits the hole in the floor and the recess in the cover. I used #6 pan head on mine, it will be covered with pad and carpet.

Re: Transmission cover question

At the firewall?? Try screwing the firewall first and then go back side to side, might be enough flex and leverage to pull it tight.

Re: Transmission cover question

I went out and looked at mine and the middle and front screw holes are bigger too. Looked in the Factory assy manual and they have a different number too, but are called out as screws, not bolts and drawn with screw type threads. If the hole in the floor is hogged out you could use one of the captive nut or screw thread pieces below and a washer under your screw or bolt. I used them to attach my kick panels. They are quick alternative to welding up the hole and redrilling for the size fastener you want to use.

Re: Transmission cover question

you can also hammer the sheetmetal flat if the hole is wallowed out
use 2 hammers to flatten the dimple the screw goes in

most everything is reproduced for the 1/2 ton 3100 trucks
if it's specific to 3/4 or bigger then your stuck making or adapting something else

if you can sew make a shift boot out of black vinyl or buy a shift boot
since a shift boot goes over a straight shaft it may not work
make it zipper or velcro to close over the brake handle
