Steering box questions.
I have an 81' c10 that has power steering and non boosted breaks. I'm thinking about swapping the steering box to a manual gear box and deleting power steering because I like the simplicity. The manual gearbox is hard to find around here and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they are a direct swap onto the later model trucks? Thanks.

Re: Steering box questions.
I have never heard of someone wanting to convert to manual steering. Are you sure? I'm sure you are, but I just drove my sons beater 80's ranger with no power steering and I almost crashed the damn thing.
I'm positive you would be able to find someone to swap with you if it was compatible. My two cents |

Re: Steering box questions.
Trust me I'm sure. I've had a few manual steering trucks and cars. Even a 40 foot greyhound from the 50's. The main reason why though is I put a 66' inline six 250 in the truck and have an extremely rigged bracket for the pump that's just begging to fail and I figure a good steering box is better than trying to make another bracket, probably easier to find too. Not to many 60's trucks with power steering.

That totally makes sense now, never mind me butting in... Didn't realize the motor swap.

No problem, not many people would guess that swap. Most people stick to the v8's.

Re: Steering box questions.
My 81 3/4 ton 2wd and my 77 1/2 ton 2wd are both manual steering. The 77 has manual brakes and the 87 has power, could not delete the power assist on the heavier brake system.
Both 250's and 3 sped manual trans and pretty much no other options.

Re: Steering box questions.
Thanks, do you know if the steering boxes are the same for both of those years? I just want to make sure they didn't change them up somewhere along the line.

Re: Steering box questions.
Shoot, I just happen to be switching to power steering this weekend and in fact I'm driving my truck up to Virginia here soon, so let me know if you can find a manual steering box.
