flexplate teeth wear

I noticed I have some wear on the edges of my flexplate teeth, but not on the starter side. The wear is along the teeth edges on back edge, facing toward the rear of the truck. Heard a little noise when first started; new engine rebuilt & installation with th350 trans. Any ideas what would cause this?

Like this?

Mine got torn up by the engine being out of time while trying to start it. worked for a while, but didn't last long. could also be just plain old and worn, or the starter might need to be shimmed.

Re: flexplate teeth wear

Most likely where it is meeting your starter..need to shim the starter a bit..

Re: flexplate teeth wear

If it was the result of it meeting the starter teeth, wouldn't the wear be on the starter side, not on the transmission side ?

Re: flexplate teeth wear

I had someone start the truck while I was underneath so I could watch the engagement of starter & flexplate. I'm sure the starter teeth are not protruding past the flexplate edge on transmission side. It appears to be engaging about 2/3 the depth of the teeth, which I understand to be ideal.

Re: flexplate teeth wear

no ideal would be to measure and shim to the factory specs as listed in the GM factory service manual

Simple conclusion!
A po installed the flywheel backwards once and chewed the back edge!

I can't imagine how he'd have gotten the torque converter bolted down. The converter pads are offset and if turned backwards would be recessed.

Re: flexplate teeth wear

Don't need a torque convertor to start a motor on a test stand!
