Gauge cluster upgrade

My truck came with the basic cluster ( speedo and gas). The PO install three aftermarket gauges under the dash (volt, temp, and oil).
I want to install a stock cluster that includes the volt, temp, and oil.
I know I'll need to replace the temp sending unit with this http://www.americanautowire.com/shop...ding-unit-5032
Will I need to do anything else or should the volt and oil be plug and play?

Re: Gauge cluster upgrade

You will need to modify your existing wiring as well. Gmcpauls website has detailed instructions on how to do it. This came up recently here as well, but I can't seem to find the thread. The oil gauge is mechanical and you will need a hard line for it. Post a wtb on the parts board and I'll bet randy or someone else has one for sale.

The aftermarket gauge I have is mechanical so I just need the fitting that goes on the stock gauge.
Thanks for the help.

See if this helps, it's a long thread but it is very informative.

Very helpful and seems pretty straight forward now. It should probably be in the FAQ.
Thanks!

Do you have the piece that threads the oil pressure line into the gauge?

How do you remove the individual pins/wires from the cluster plug?

Small screw driver pushed in from opisite direction of wire. The metal clip has a tang on it. Depress it and pull it out by the wire.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Did you get the parts you need for your oil line? You can get the copper line kit at most parts stores for around $10 - $12.00 that should have all the fittings you need.

Good information from Andy on removing the terminals from the connector.

If you haven't bought your temp sender yet, I just bought mine from www.lectriclimited.com. Found them searching for temp gauge info on here.

Do you have a part number? I called them last week and the lady I spoke with said they didn't have a unit for a 70-72.

Re: Gauge cluster upgrade

I bought my mechanical oil gauge copper tube and fittings from Classic Parts. It works great on my 1981 and will fit 67-72.

Re: Gauge cluster upgrade

I know that changing those pins has to work, but it didn't for me. I put a cluster in my 68 GMC that was a brand new [rebuild] by a member on here that does real nice work. I followed the instructions to the T and even took more time than I should have doing it. I had a different cluster plug and changed over to and used some pins from it to the ones that had to be added. When I got done all that worked was the speedo and it made a noise every time it came to a 0 on the tenths side! I only drove it about ten miles after I put the tac/vac in it [and a tilt at the same time] but it is next on the list to come to the shop for frame-off/swap rebuild as a short truck any way.So maybe then I will get it figured out. I have another truck in the shop now plus another inline to be built, and I have tach dashes for them all So maybe I can find out what my problem is/was with the other. I know it has been done to death, other have done it right? Jim

The size on the backside of the gauge is 7/16-20.
I can't find the adaptor in the auto parts store?
Any suggestions?
